Project Coordinator
University of Chicago - SHARE Network
Chicago, Illinois, United States
Luis Cordero, BS, is the Project Coordinator for the SHARE Network at the University of Chicago and a Master of Public Health candidate at the Rutgers School of Public Health. At Rutgers, Luis is concentrating in Population Aging and completing a certificate in Clinical Epidemiology. He is driven by the belief that education is a primary catalyst for transforming geriatric care. His commitment to this field is deeply personal, rooted in his experience as a young caregiver to his late mother and grandmother. This journey has fueled his passion for advancing person-centered and culturally responsive models of eldercare that prioritize the dignity of risk.
As a former Thomas J. Watson Fellow, Luis traveled to ten countries to conduct his research, Foregrounding Dignity and Kindness in Care Facilities, examining global approaches to aging and the role of educational interventions in care delivery. This international perspective informs his current work with the SHARE Network, an Illinois Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP), as well as his service as a volunteer Long-Term Care Ombudsman advocating for quality in care settings. He is also committed to advancing understanding of dementia through education, drawing on his experience as a former psychometrist to emphasize the importance of cognitive testing as a gateway to timely resources and support. Luis envisions the future of long-term care as rooted in community-centered models, where education empowers families and leads to more equitable access.
Luis aims to become a clinician-researcher who empowers healthcare teams to deliver more than just treatment; he seeks to provide families with the tools and hope needed to navigate dementia. By investing in prevention and meeting communities where they are, Luis is dedicated to ensuring that every older adult is seen, heard, and cared for with unwavering kindness.
