  • Explore core AI concepts and tools relevant to public health professionals.
  • Identify and discuss gaps in graduate training regarding AI.
  • Discuss opportunities for strengthening graduate training to better prepare students for a workforce that demands AI literacy
As artificial intelligence reshapes how state health departments operate — from disease surveillance to public communications — a critical question emerges: are graduate training programs keeping pace? This session, co-facilitated by the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and Southern New Hampshire University, will level-set the current landscape of AI adoption across state health agencies, the workforce competencies they need in new hires, and where academic programs stand in meeting that demand. Through a mix of presentations and hands-on activities, participants will examine the gap between practice and preparation and leave with concrete ideas for closing it.
